Strip 31: Into the Depths

A lot of Steel Salvation, either consciously or subconsciously, has been inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979), and this tunnel was a very conscious reference to the “Meat Grinder” in the film. Aside from being a brilliantly framed and incredibly tense scene, the Meat Grinder fits thematically, since it’s one of the many traps in the Zone that is described, but never actually witnessed. Much like Dy-Gar himself, the Meat Grinder is supposedly extremely dangerous, but it is ambiguous how dangerous, if at all, it really is.
