Strip 13: High Stakes
A little background info on some of the more obscure terms being thrown around here: Mr. Sobek has been referred to as a “Hekan,” and while you can probably gather by this point that a Hekan is a psychic warrior of some kind, the word connects back to the Egyptian motifs in his design. Heka is the ancient Egyptian word for magic, and is also the name of the Egyptian god of mysticism. The Hekan Special Forces, of which you’ll learn more later, are genetically engineered telepaths, limited in number and feared throughout the Starnet, so they naturally steep themselves in godlike mysticism to enhance their reputations. Each operative is named after a different god, which is why Sobek, the crocodile god, has a crocodile crest on top of his helmet. There are hints of more mystical beliefs common in the Starnet in this strip (bone casting, the Graces, nebula wraiths), but we’ll get into those as they come up...
