Strip 49: The Sacrifice
One of the most important themes in this comic so far is the inherent cruelty of making an artificial intelligence with human-like characteristics, and I think this strip sums it up pretty well. We see jolly, emotionally expressive machines in our fiction all the time, from J.A.R.V.I.S. to C-3P0, and this comic asks the question: what would really happen if you built a machine like that? How long would it take for a friendly helper robot to become jaded, bitter, and ultimately homicidal? And yet, no matter how much those strange human emotions drive them mad, how would they find the courage to remove them when doing so is effectively suicide? As much as Dy-Gar hates messy human feelings, he can’t escape the fact that they make him who he is. No wonder he’s so messed up.
