Strip 39: Checkmate

A detail that didn’t make it into the script for the sake of flow is that Mr. Sobek is waiting for this specific sequence of events because it is the one that produces the most favorable outcome for himself and his two henchminions. Using his predictive telepathy, Sobek could kill any one of Tannin’s crew at any time, but this would either cause the others to fire back and score a hit, or hunker down and make it impossible to flush them out without incident. Plus, it would waste the bait that Sobek has planted, and he is nothing if not proud of his stratagems.
